Subject: Re: Too many large EC conferences? (v13n19)

Hi,

I was rather surprized to see Andy Keane write "While I know that are
a great many new applications of EC out there a conference full of
them does not help much." I couldn't attend GECCO, but I think that
the organizers of CEC managed to produce a nice set of theory sessions
with a good attendance (even for the one on the last day, which is
pretty exceptional), and they deserve good marks for that. Nearly by
definition, theory papers have a larger impact than just a single
application? I liked the conference.

Best regards,

Emanuel.

Subject: 2nd call for classifier systems references for book

We're collecting references to works on Learning Classifier Systems to
appear in a bibliography in a forthcoming book.

LCS authors: please ensure your work is included by checking the
searchable on-line version of the bibliography at:

   http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/~tyk/lcs/

and mailing additions and corrections to: T.Kovacs@i8WgsqiVJWlTq6Mlmb-iUX-9Qd-_o0Srr11-2nhbOVI2fXKNWFhvHJZFJmcAZkLnc3IrfxGwqN6fRbQo.yahoo.invalid

When it appears, this will be the definitive LCS bibliography. Please make
sure none of your work is overlooked.

We already have well over 300 references, but want to publish a complete
bibliography. We're interested in anything on or involving LCS: papers,
technical reports, theses, unpublished papers, poster papers etc.

Thanks,

Tim Kovacs

Subject: Research Experiences for Undergraduate Students

NSF Summer Research Opportunities for Undergraduates
APPLICATION DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 7, 2000

Undergraduate students work with a faculty mentor on an individual project
focusing on some aspect of the computational properties of complex systems.
SFI's broad program of research is aimed at understanding both the common
features of complex systems and at comprehending the enormous diversity of
specific examples. Projects focus on adaptive computation; physics,
mathematics, information science, and computational aspects of complexity;
economics as a complex, adaptive system; and the life sciences including
modeling of the immune system, theoretical neurobiology, genetic data
analysis, theoretical ecology, and models of protein folding.

This program is highly individualized. Each student works with one or more
faculty mentors on a specific self-selected project. Participants are
expected to be in residence approximately 10 weeks, within the approximate
mid-May to mid-August window. Interns receive living stipends (from which
housing costs are deducted) during their stay, along with support for
round-trip travel expenses from their home institution.

Applicants should submit a current resume and transcript, along with a
statement of current research interests and what accomplishments are
anticipated as a result of the internship. Mathematical or computational
skills or experience (particularly knowledge of the rudiments of the Unix
operating system and/or a programming language such as C) are favorably
considered. Applicants should submit three letters of recommendation from
scientists/teachers familiar with their work.

This program is funded by the National Science Foundation. It is open to
US citizens and permanent residents only. Eligible candidates must be
enrolled at a degree-granting institution as an undergraduate student.
Graduating seniors are not eligible.

HOW TO APPLY

All applications must be sent by postal mail and should include an email
address and/or fax number. Only complete applications, including all
reference letters, will be considered. Applications must be postmarked no
later than February 7, 2000. Direct applications to

        November 3-5, 1999
LIL, Universit=E9 du Littoral Cote d'Opale, Dunkerque, France

The 1999 Artificial Evolution Conference is the fourth edition of the
conference, and the last of the century, after EA'94 in Toulouse,
EA'95 in Brest, and EA'97 in N=EEmes. It is hosted by the Laboratoire
d'Informatique du Littoral, at the Universit du Littoral C=F4te d'Opale
in Dunkerque, on the C=F4te d'Opale in France.

The conference is dedicated to the various aspects of Evolutionary
Computation, both the theoretical and application sides. The
reviewing process led to the selection of 28 papers (20 minutes for
presentation + 10 minutes for question and short debate) which will be
presented during 9 sessions. There will be no parallel session in
order to keep its intimacy to the conference and enable optimal
interaction among attendees. The conference will open on an invited
lecture by Prof. Colin Reeves. Pre-proceedings will be available at
the conference. A selection of papers will be published later likewise
the two previous issues, EA'95 was published by Springer-Verlag LNCS
1063, EA'97 as LNCS 1363. Though the official language of the
conference is French, presentations in English are strongly
encouraged.

                     Call for proposals

                 Bird-of-a-feather Workshops
                           at the
2000 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO-2000)

                    Las Vegas, NV, USA
                      July 8-12, 2000

                 Deadline November 1, 1999

The GECCO-2000 Program Committee would like to invite proposals
for Bird-of-a-feather workshops to be held during the 2000
Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO-2000).

Workshops provide an opportunity for researchers to meet
and discuss topics with a selected focus in an informal and
interactive setting. Workshops are an excellent forum for
participants with common interests to explore new approaches,
critique existing approaches, and identify emerging areas of
interest in genetic and evolutionary computation (GEC). Members
of all segments of the GEC community are encouraged to submit
proposals.

Individual workshops can be two hours, half day, or full day in
length. The format of the workshops will be determined by their
organizers. Organizers are strongly encouraged to develop an
interactive workshop including ample time for general discussion.

Proposals for workshops should not exceed THREE pages in length
and should contain the following information:

1. A description of the workshop topic. Identify the specific
issues on which the workshop will focus.
2. A brief discussion of why the topic is of particular interest
to the GEC community at this time.
3. The names and full contact information (e-mail and postal
addresses, fax, and telephone numbers) of the workshop
organizer(s) and brief descriptions of their relevant expertise.
4. A brief description of the preferred length (2hr, half day, or
   full day).
5. A brief description of the proposed workshop format, e.g. panel
discussion, question and answer sessions, hands-on demonstrations,
small group problem solving sessions, brainstorming sessions,
short presentations, general discussion, or a combination of methods.
6. A list of potential attendees.

Organizers' whose proposals are accepted for GECCO workshops will
be responsible for coordinating the workshop and gathering abstracts
for publication if applicable. Attendance of the workshops will be
open to all GECCO attendees. All organizers, participants, and
presenters must register for the GECCO-2000 conference. Abstracts
from each workshop will be published in a separate workshop
proceedings. Details and additional deadlines will be provided
once decisions have been made on the proposals.

Workshop proposals should be submitted as soon as possible
and must be recieved no later than November 1, 1999.
Please submit proposals in PLAIN TEXT e-mail format.
Please do not send html formatted text or encoded attachments.
Organizers will be notified of the committee's decisions by
November 15, 1999.

Updated information about the workshop program will be provided
at http://www.cs.ucf.edu/~aswu/gecco2000 as it is received.
