Autonomy Control: Lessons from the Emotional
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
a symposium held at the
15th European Meeting on Cybernetics and Systems Research
(EMCSR 2000)
April 25-28, 2000, Vienna, Austria, EU
<URL:http://www.ai.univie.ac.at/~paolo/conf/ace2000/>
Paper submission deadline: October 20, 1999
------------------------------ // ------------------------------
INTRODUCTION:
In living systems, the Emotional appears to be related to numerous
aspects of their ability to maintain control over essential/important
facets of their relationship to their physical and social
environments. Against the background of the intensifying dialogue
between the sciences of the living and of the artifacts (engineering)
this symposium is aimed at assessing the state of research relating
the natural phenomenon of the Emotional to the world of the artificial
for purposes of autonomy control.
By focussing on this issue, this symposium shall further the dialogue
that was successfully established with a workshop on "Grounding
Emotions in Adaptive Systems"[1] at last year's International
Conference of the Society for Adaptive Behaviour (SAB'98, Zurich,
Switzerland), and continued at events including the AAAI 1998 Fall
Symposium "Emotional and Intelligent: The Tangled Knot of
Cognition"[2] (Orlando, FL, USA) and the AA'99 Workshops on "Autonomy
Control Software"[3] and on "Emotion-Based Agent Architectures"[4]
(Seattle, WA, USA). In particular, the discussions around a position
paper [5] at the Autonomy Control Software workshop gave directly rise
to the idea of organising the present event.
In this context, submissions are welcome addressing topics including,
but not limited to:
* Survivability - coping with unknown situations or
bounding the hysteresis of vital parameters;
* Motivation - internal processing leading to persistence
or changes in behaviour;
* Adaptivity - tuning of a pre-existing structure;
* Learning - creation of new structures related to relevant
aspects of the environment, "representations";
* Social Capabilities - e.g. control over shared resources including
other individuals; communication, empathy;
IMPORTANT DATES:
Paper submission deadline .............. October 20th, 1999
Notification of acceptance/rejection ... December 7th, 1999
