Search For MCO Canceled
(no story link)
Pasadena - September 24, 1999 - JPL officially
ended the search for Mars Climate Orbiter at
3 pm PDT September 24 following extensive sky
surveys via the DSN's 70-meter dishes in an
attempt to regain contact with the spacecraft.
An unofficial search will continue to 9pm PDT
via Gladstone DSN. JPL estimates the altitude
of MCO's closest approach to Mars as it was
firing its engine to enter orbit was 57 kms
(35 miles). The target altitude had been apx
140 kms (90 miles), with minimum survivable
altitude for MCO at between 85 and 100 kms
(about 53 to 62 miles). The project is moving
swiftly to determine the causes of this error,
assisted by an internal review team.
