There's a great deal of opposition to Estrada's nomination to the U.S.
Court of Appeals. NARAL Pro-Choice America, other reproductive rights
and women's organizations, and many civil rights, environmental, and
labor groups oppose Estrada's nomination because he has refused to
answer questions about critical issues, including the right to privacy.
Steamrolling should not be rewarded with a lifetime appointment to the
bench.

State legislators have introduced an unprecedented number of anti-choice
bills, some aimed directly at banning abortion, others at making
services more difficult to access. Some highlights (and some lowlights):
Good news first:
* Many states are introducing legislation to improve access to
contraceptives, including emergency contraception, and comprehensive,
medically accurate sex education!
The bad news:
* Oklahoma followed Georgia's lead in introducing legislation
requiring a woman seeking an abortion to obtain a "death warrant." We
reported on Georgia's bill in December, and many of you replied that the
bill could not be real. It is all too real. In fact, the Georgia
Legislature is now going to hear a bill that would require a woman to go
"seek a grand jury indictment against the fetus for an applicable
capitol offense" before exercising her constitutional right to terminate
a pregnancy. The copy-cat development in Oklahoma sadly confirms our
concern that this kind of egregious state legislation is an all too real
danger in a climate where anti-choice hardliners are emboldened by the
rhetoric and actions of a White House and Congress opposed to a woman's
right to choose.
* Seven states have introduced measures that would ban all or most
abortions (Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode
Island and South Carolina). In addition, Montana and New Mexico
introduced bills proposing constitutional amendments granting embryos
and fetuses unprecedented legal rights in an attempt to prevent women
from exercising their right to choose.

On February 26, the Supreme Court ruled that Operation Rescue and other
anti-choice organizations and individuals did not violate the Racketeer
Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), reversing a lower court's
decision that enjoined the defendants from using threats and violence

A Pennsylvania white supremacist leader was arrested earlier this month
after allegedly planning to bomb reproductive health clinics. And in
North Carolina, a registered nurse took a few shots at a clinic -
luckily, before it had opened for the day. These are frightening times
for the brave women and men who provide reproductive health services in
our country. Please, do what you can to support them in your community.

> Anti-Choice Legislator goes too far
A Virginia anti-choice legislator went too far for some of his
Republican colleagues recently when he sent them a sensationalized
letter and plastic fetus urging abortion restrictions. According to the
Washington Post, "while many Republicans said they were [also] repulsed
by [the] letter, they reaffirmed their commitment to their package of
social legislation." The Virginia legislature introduced a record 29
bills this session to restrict a woman's right to choose.

We've all been told by anti-choice forces that support for their
perspective is growing. Is it true? Let's look at the controversy around
abstinence-only curricula. A recent survey conducted by an anti-choice
group on the subject contained remarkably misleading questions, and
resulted in conclusions that directly contradict clear evidence that 89%
of parents support comprehensive, responsible, medically-based sex
education. The moral of the story? Don't believe the anti-choice hype:
Most Americans are pro-choice and they support medically accurate
