You are right, but this replacement of atoms is an entirely different process than the uploading replacement process, with nothing in common except....
With the uploading replacement process you will be picking up this functionality. How will it dunction in silicon? Deeeeeeh? Showstopper??

The technology you are craving would appear to be at the nano or femto scale, which would require a very strong/Drexlerian realization of nanotech.

Another 'simply engineering' dismissal. Tell me how it would be done, giving some consideration to relative sizes, minimum size for required function, travelling pathways, navigation procedures and material replacement procedures..
